I'm going to have to see how they deal with the threat, but a n of 8 being treated as significant makes me hopeful.

If locusts convert other grasshoppers into locusts before they feast and starve themselves to death, then even a few locusts are worrying. The standard expectation with this scenario is a logistic curve shaped population explosion. Currently the chars are in the portion of the logistic curve that looks exponential. i.e. There's good reason to expect there to be twice the number of locusts tommorow, and what are the chances that those 8 were all of them? Given what that means for crops, every moment does count. (replace "twice" and "tommorow" with a multiplicative factor and time period that's more to your taste, it's still exponential until the population density starts hitting environmental constraints.) ")

This is oddly compelling, given the somewhat mundane subject matter. Well written. Definitely gonna watch this closely.
