I've always wanted to read(/play) Dangan Ronpa, but I probably won't any time soon. Is this worth reading for those with little knowledge of canon?

I've gotten that question a few times--You may be confused for the first arc or so, but after that the story diverges from canon more and more anyway so it won't matter too much.
