Last release I had someone saying "uh oh, you're giving Naruto a lot of enhancements!" Well, today you find out what they are. Mwahaha.
u/Transfuturist [+3] Carthago delenda est. (33 minutes later)
"Yes, Fox-sama," Hinata said diffidently.
diffident
adjective.
- lacking confidence in one's own ability, worth, or fitness; timid; shy.
- restrained or reserved in manner, conduct, etc.
- Archaic. distrustful.
u/eaglejarl [+5] (36 minutes later)
Yes. And 'diffidently' is the adverbial form.
u/Transfuturist [+1] Carthago delenda est. (40 minutes later)
Archaic. distrustful.
Archaic. distrustful.
Archaic. distrustful.
u/eaglejarl [+3] (42 minutes later)
I'm really not sure what your point is. Are you correcting my grammar, are you telling me that Hinata is speaking distrustfully, or is it something else?
I'm using it in the normal sense -- the shy and timid girl sounds hesitant and uncertain when talking to the giant monster that destroyed her city a decade or so ago.
u/Kishoto [+5] (3 hours later)
He's saying you used it in an underneath-the-underneath sort of way. Hinata is speaking reservedly, but underneath that, she's speaking distrustfully (because who'd trust the evil fox demon who body modded your boyfriend)
It's fine if you didn't. He was just suggesting that's what you may have been doing.
Or you could've known this all along and like stringing us along, you sneaky bastard O.o
u/eaglejarl [+2] (3 hours later)
Or you could've known this all along and like stringing us along, you sneaky bastard O.o
Would I do such a thing? ;>
u/Kishoto [+3] (3 hours later)
OMFG. I'm about to just assume everything you say is a Schrodinger's box situation. It may be true. It may be false. Point is, I don't know which :(
u/eaglejarl [+1] (4 hours later)
Eeeexcellent. taps fingers in evil way
u/Nevereatcars [+1] The Greatest Is Behind (3 hours later)
Of course you would. But are you?
u/eaglejarl [+2] (4 hours later)
I can neither confirm nor deny that I was messing with the readers' heads because I derived satisfaction from their cries of confused anguish.
u/Nevereatcars [+6] The Greatest Is Behind (5 hours later)
WHAT AN ODDLY SPECIFIC THING TO NEITHER CONFIRM NOR DENY!
u/Kishoto [+3] (8 hours later)
I AGREE THAT THE SPECIFICITY OF SAID THING CHOICE IS ODD!
u/eaglejarl [+3] (8 hours later)
I CAN NEITHER CONFIRM NOR DENY THAT MY THING CHOICE WAS OF A NON-EVEN NATURE!
u/Nevereatcars [+2] The Greatest Is Behind (12 hours later)
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
u/eaglejarl [+3] (18 hours later)
beams happily while crossing off an item on today's TODO list
u/Transfuturist [+1] Carthago delenda est. (53 minutes later)
Well, you could at least pretend you knew all along. All according to keikaku and all that. But now it's just awkward.
...
u/IomKg [+1] (59 minutes later)
Or its what he wants you to think...
u/Transfuturist [+1] Carthago delenda est. (an hour later)
Levels within levels.

"Not my mindscape," Kurama said. "I can do minor resculpts inside it, but making a connection from the outside to the inside is something only you can do." He fell silent, thinking. After a moment he shook his head. "If there's a way to make this work I'm not seeing it," he said. "I wish you'd hooked it up back when I first asked, it would have avoided all this." He sighed. "Well, I can understand why you didn't trust me, I suppose. Anyway...I have a feeling like there's something I'm missing, but I can't figure out what it is. I'll keep thinking on it; maybe we can work something out. In the meantime, the best I can suggest is to go practice. If anything really bad happens, just call me and I'll run the body for you while we deal with it."
Welp, if nothing else Kurama is proving good at manipulation and slowly widening the bounderies of what he's allowed to do. Poor Naruto.
u/eaglejarl [+4] (35 minutes later)

Welp, if nothing else Kurama is proving good at manipulation and slowly widening the bounderies of what he's allowed to do. Poor Naruto.
You think only evil people do this? Have you met any mothers ever? All mothers are manipulative and trying to increase the boundaries of what they can decide for their children, for their own good!!!
I'd probably prefer an upfront and clearly EldritchAbomination!Kurama over a Motherly!Kurama. It's just too mind-breakingly uncomfortable otherwise. Of course then there's Sayuri.
u/eaglejarl [+2] (a day later)
Of all the terms I would use to describe Kurama, 'motherly' would not be among them in a million years.
u/PeridexisErrant [+2] put aside fear for courage, and death for life (a day later)
IT'sHe's a lot older than that, so no worries. ^^^WORRY
u/Transfuturist [+3] Carthago delenda est. (38 minutes later)
Kurama growled under his breath. "I said I can't..." He paused and cocked his head in thought, then shook it. "Like I said, I can't magically give you knowledge," he said. "I'm sorry, you'll just have to practice."
"You thought of something there," Naruto said. "What was it?"
YOUUUUUUUUU
u/JackStargazer [+8] Primordial Apologist (3 hours later)
DENSE MOTHERFUCKER.
u/tilkau [+2] (8 hours later)
I might have lost track a bit here, but AFAICS knowledge granting ought to be doable.. but obviously modifying the brain creates such huge trust issues that yeah, it would be pretty irrational for Kurama to do so, even if it hugely increases Naruto's survivability.
Of course, there's no guarantee he hasn't already done so (eg. preprogrammed parts of Naruto's brain so that he will 'pick up' the needed skills with unusual aptitude). The problem is more of saying things that invoke distrust.
u/JackStargazer [+2] Primordial Apologist (11 hours later)
That was more in response to the amazingly obvious manipulation going on at the end there, where Level 3 Kurama fakes a pause of inspiration that he knows Level 2 Naruto will pick up on an question, priming him for later deception.
u/tilkau [+1] (12 hours later)
I dunno. Personally if I had been in that situation, and picked up on that, I would have responded exactly like that. Why give away that information by actually coming out and saying something? What would calling bullshit / refusing to bite actually achieve here?
(I've got no doubt that Kurama is outmaneuvering Naruto. It doesn't have to be on such a low level, though. We saw the obvious manipulation -- what's the non-obvious manipulation?)
u/eaglejarl [+1] (a day later)
what's the non-obvious manipulation?
If you noticed it, wouldn't that mean it was obvious?
u/tilkau [+1] (a day later)
.. No. If you're actually serious, that's a really bizarre definition of obvious.
Obvious is about the amount of thought (or subtlety of thought) it takes to notice something.
u/eaglejarl [+0] (a day later)
I guess I have a low prior on the idea "people put in significant thought while reading my fanfiction."
u/Nevereatcars [+2] The Greatest Is Behind (a day later)
Are you saying we aren't impressing you?
u/eaglejarl [+1] (a day later)
Errr...no. That's not where I was going at all. Perhap s/my// would have been clearer.
u/XxChronOblivionxX [+3] (7 hours later)
Welp, on the bright side, his combat potential just shot through the fucking roof.
On the negative side, he now looks like a complete monster.
This is why genies are dangerous.
u/Magish511 [+6] (23 hours later)
Meh, you can optimize your body for looks after you're not in regular peril of dying before you hit puberty.
u/Kishoto [+4] (29 minutes later)
rescuse your lemmings.
rescue?
Also.....Kurama seems way too fucking nice, and it's honestly concerning me. I want to believe him when he says he only attacks places with build ups of malice (which is kind of canon, only for you to realize Konoha wasn't such a place, as it was Tobi that made him attack it anyway) but I'm kinda concerned. What with the whole eldritch abomination thing he's got going. Is he nice now /u/eaglejarl? Is he??? T_T
u/eaglejarl [+5] (38 minutes later)
rescue
Thank you, fixed.
Is he nice now /u/eaglejarl[1] ? Is he??? T_T
Well of course he's nice! I mean, yes, he's a city-destroying elder demon, but look at how polite he's being, and how he just rebuilt Naruto into a massive inhuman combat monster. I mean, sure, the fact that Naruto can't even stand up right now might be considered a drawback, but it's still awesome, right? Right?!
EDIT:
he only attacks places with build ups of malice (which is kind of canon, only for you to realize Konoha wasn't such a place,
Konoha is a ninja village. Its entire reason for existing is to train mass murderers. They have a department that is literally called "Torture and Interrogation".
u/JackStargazer [+6] Primordial Apologist (3 hours later)

Of course! I mean, he only destroys evil cities anyways, so that's perfectly fine!
How do we know he only destroys evil cities? Well, Kurama told us of course, silly, and why would he lie?
u/eaglejarl [+1] (4 hours later)
Exactly! Now you're getting it! :>
u/Kishoto [+4] (3 hours later)
Yes, but the Fox didn't attack Konoha due to those things, is what I'm saying. It attacked because Madara Uchiha hijacked it. Although, don't get me wrong, it would've probably attacked them anyway, considering they'd kept him locked up for almost a hundred years by this point.
u/eaglejarl [+2] (4 hours later)
Yes, but the Fox didn't attack Konoha due to those things, is what I'm saying. It attacked because Madara Uchiha hijacked it.
Fair point. I'm going off book on that one though, because I think it's utter baloney that a human with spinny eyeballs could control the Fox. I'm also off book on how long he's been captured -- in my version, the Sage put the Beasts into jinchuuriki from the get-go.
u/Kishoto [+2] (8 hours later)
Yea, that's fair. I started getting really annoyed with canon's treatment of the Sharingan. I mean, from inception, it seemed really OP already. Copying any ninjutsu, reading body movements at superhuman speed, casting genjutsu with a glance. But then they kept adding on more shit. Oh hey, I can trap anyone I want in a 3 day long torture fest, and I can shoot black flames that take 7 days to go away. Oh, and I can make a big ass, practically impenetrable suit of armor that also has weapons that are equally as good. Oh, I can sacrifice sight in a single eye. And reverse my death, after it's already happened.
EDIT: Oh. And I can control any of the nine walking natural disasters of our world at any time.
Get fucked canon Sharingan.
u/eaglejarl [+2] (8 hours later)
The copying ninjutsu thing and super-speed reading things were at least related. OP, but related and believable. Everything from then on was just full-on crazy. So, yeah, I'm with you.
u/JackStargazer [+3] Primordial Apologist (12 hours later)
Don't forget the one that can shatter space-time and functions like something an Entity from Worm would use.
u/eaglejarl [+1] (18 hours later)

Jesus, Kishimoto. That is some of the laziest writing I've ever seen.
u/LordSwedish [+6] Q Continuum (3 hours later)
Notice that bit at the end where Kurama convinces Naruto that all this could have been avoided if he just got permission to mess with Naruto's brain? He may be a lot nicer here but he's gone from "imprisoned and assumed evil" to "napping on a mountain with near unrestricted access on the horizon."
He's probably not evil but that doesn't mean he isn't planning on restricting Naruto to weekend custody of his body.
u/eaglejarl [+6] (9 hours later)
He's probably not evil but that doesn't mean he isn't planning on restricting Naruto to weekend custody of his body.
I can promise you with complete sincerity that Kurama has no intention of setting up a situation where Naruto has weekend custody of his body.
u/ZeroNihilist [+2] (10 hours later)
This is because Kurama is Really Nice™ and definitely doesn't want to take over Naruto's body indefinitely and without restriction.
u/eaglejarl [+3] (10 hours later)
Exactly!
u/Cariyaga [+2] Kyubey did nothing wrong (22 minutes later)
Ahhh, going that route as far as the tailed beasts go, huh? I've always found that one a lot more interesting than the whole demonspawn-bent-on-destroying-everyone thing that some fics go. ...well, at least, that's what Kurama wants us to think of him.
u/Transfuturist [+9] Carthago delenda est. (27 minutes later)
well, at least, that's what Kurama wants us to think of him
This is literally always the answer ever. /u/eaglejarl, you sick son of a bitch. I'm not trusting the Big Bad this time! Never again!
u/eaglejarl [+3] (30 minutes later)
beams happily
u/JackStargazer [+1] Primordial Apologist (12 hours later)
Why is it that everytime you mention anything about Kurama, I get flashbacks to the totally-nice-and-really-not-a-bad-guy Epic Diplomancer Lich from a certain D&D fiction I read one time?
Eh, probably just paranoia.
u/eaglejarl [+1] (18 hours later)
Nah, Afi was completely straightforward about the fact that he was evil. He just didn't feel like going out world conquering and such, but when he did he had no problem creating living people ex nihilo just so that he could immediately destroy their souls and turn them into undead monsters.
In contrast, Kurama is a nice guy. Really. He said so, even!
u/xamueljones [+3] My arch-enemy is entropy (a day later)
Eh....unlike a lot of other people here, I'm not really seeing Kurama as evil so much as that he has his own goals to pursue which may or may not be a good thing for humans. Sorta like how most humans don't really hate or like bugs, but just don't care what would happen to them...unless the bugs get too uppy. squints at nearby cockroach
u/eaglejarl [+2] (23 minutes later)
Rats, I'd thought this was actually original. Where else have you seen it?
u/Cariyaga [+2] Kyubey did nothing wrong (27 minutes later)
I can't say, exactly. I've read so many fics in my time that they all blur together. It IS a very interesting concept though, original or not, and I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
u/IomKg [+2] (an hour later)
Im fairly sure it at the very least was the case in "The Girl From Whirlpool".
u/eaglejarl [+2] (an hour later)
sigh
Ah well. I've never had an original idea before this, I don't see why it should start now.
(Seriously, I haven't. Every time I thought I had, it turned out someone else had done it years or decades earlier. It's frustrating.)
u/JackStargazer [+3] Primordial Apologist (3 hours later)
(Seriously, I haven't. Every time I thought I had, it turned out someone else had done it years or decades earlier. It's frustrating.)
The basis of the Lorite order is Saunt Lora's Proposition which states that all possible ideas have already been found, in other words, there is nothing new to discover. The Proposition itself is considered to be the Last Idea, although after the death of Saunt Lora, one of her fids showed that her proposition had itself been expressed 4000 years earlier.
u/Transfuturist [+1] Carthago delenda est. (10 hours later)
That sounded like Douglas Adams, not Neal Stephenson.
u/JackStargazer [+1] Primordial Apologist (11 hours later)
Anathem has quite a few of those kinds of things in there. It's probably my favorite Stephenson book.
If there is anyone who can rival Adams for worldbuilding infodumps, it's Stephenson.
u/Kishoto [+3] (3 hours later)
There's nothing new under the sun, as they say. It's about how we use the ingredients, not what they actually are (in most cases)
u/Cariyaga [+2] Kyubey did nothing wrong (an hour later)
Ah, don't feel bad for it. It's in how you put the disparate elements of a story together that makes it great, not that any one element is unique to it.
u/eaglejarl [+3] (an hour later)
It bothered me for years, but I've gotten over it. At base, both creativity and success lie in execution, not in conception.
u/Saffrin-chan [+2] (a day later)
Naruto has a bunch of extra eyes all over his head? There's only one place left for this to go ^(not ^really ^but ^the ^extra ^eyes ^made ^me ^think ^of ^this ^completely ^canon ^guy)
