Two thoughts:

First: Man Orochimaru and the Fox play off of each other so well, I'd read a bunch of chapters just on this negotiation. I can see the subtle lawyerings and implications from my knowledge of both characters seeping in to what and how they are speaking and it's hilarious watching them fence on multiple levels.

Second: It's really nice of Kyuubi to be so concerned about the well-being of Team Anko. They are clearly the kind of people he has respect for and wants to see protected of his own free will, even without the deal with Naruto. We can tell because he says that he respects some people, and why would good ol' Kyuubi lie?

After all, he's even taken it upon himself to judge and prevent people from gaining god-like powers that could warrant an existential risk to humanity! I'm sure he's doing it out of altruism or at least enlightened self interest, and not just to prevent anyone from matching his own level of near-god power.

What a cool guy.

Thanks. I was having so much fun writing it, but didn't want to drag it on too long.

Exactly! I'm glad you saw that.

I'm sure he's doing it out of altruism or at least enlightened self interest, and not just to prevent anyone from matching his own level of near-god power.

Absolutely. He's nice that way.

What a cool guy.

I know, right? I'm glad you recognize this; everyone else is so suspicious of him, and I've never understood why.

u/eaglejarl [+5] (a day later)

In contrast to your comment, I've suddenly received two or three reviews, one after another, informing me that the team should have escaped from Sound "ten chapters ago" and moved on to the next arc.

I notice I am confused. Exactly what do they think the next arc will be, and why are they in such a hurry to get there?

u/JackStargazer [+5] Primordial Apologist (a day later)

I think a lot of readers on FF.net are used to very formulaic arc-based writing.

I'm sure you know that 90% of the fics on there, even the good ones, hit the Stations of The Canon pretty goddamn hard. The Mission To Wave, the Chuunin Exam and all its subplots, Pein, Timeskip, etc.

So likely, they are expecting something similar, a clear 'arc' system of A>B>C>D.

Instead they get RationalSociopath!Orochimaru and LawyerSpirit!Kyuubi. They likely were not expecting that.

u/Atilme [+7] (3 hours later)

Maybe it's my naivete, or my lack of canon Naruto knowledge, but I find myself actually rooting for Kurama and Orochimaru. Because I don't think that two beings capable of rational thought who live on the world would want to see said world destroyed, so their stated goals make sense to me. I know that something bad is going to happen, and it's definitely going to involve these two, I just don't think it has to necessarily be bad for all of humanity.

u/eaglejarl [+7] (4 hours later)

Their stated goals are definitely reasonable, yes. The problem is that one of them is a psychopath and the other is a demon giant, city-destroying living-chakra Primordial furball from beyond time and space, so the means they choose to achieve their goals might be problematic.

u/kaukamieli [+6] (7 hours later)

Ah, but he's just "demon" because that's what they decided to name him. They could call him "god" or "angel" or "chakra beast" or whatever, but they of course went for the most evil name.

He's just a living furball of chakra. He has feelings too. Don't go calling people demons, they might believe you and act accordingly.

u/eaglejarl [+6] (8 hours later)

You're absolutely correct. I apologize for my thoughtless racism; I don't know what I was thinking. I've corrected it.

u/Atilme [+4] (4 hours later)

Yeah, we've seen that the demon has no qualms with changing Naruto's form to satisfy its goals... This isn't going to end well, is it?

Oh, and Happy Cake Day!

u/eaglejarl [+2] (a day later)

This isn't going to end well, is it?

Depends on your definition of 'well'. :>

u/clawclawbite [+3] (4 hours later)

It may just be me, but somehow I think a functionally immortal Orochimaru with regular access to help from a beast is an existential risk...

u/eaglejarl [+3] (a day later)

I think that's a bit unfair. Orochimaru isn't interested in wiping out the entire human race...I mean, unless they really annoy him.

u/clawclawbite [+3] (a day later)

Not deliberately, but I don't trust him avoiding high risk high reward exparements. What if he tries to tap the moon chalkra?

u/eaglejarl [+4] (a day later)

shakes head sadly

You people. All of you. So suspicious of poor Orochimaru. Just because the man is a psychopath, you feel he's untrustworthy. I mean, sure, there's a little vivisection going on and, well, I suppose he does kill his own people if they even slightly question him at the wrong time, but that's not so bad, right? I mean, it's not like he burned down an orphanage or cancelled Firefly!

u/clawclawbite [+4] (a day later)

See, that is dangerous behavior. You always want a second critical opinion when designing high risk experiments.

And I expect he would burn down an orphanage if he used it as a raveger virus test site.

u/eaglejarl [+2] (2 days later)

Well, okay, fine, but he wouldn't cancel Firefly -- he's not that much of a monster.

u/clawclawbite [+2] (2 days later)

Well, Walsh is likely a Leaf missing-nin, so you do get insight from watching, plus, I'd bet O was just fascinated by River Tam.

So I'll give him that level of non-monster.

u/eaglejarl [+1] (2 days later)

Why do you think that Wash (no 'l', btw) was a Leaf missing-nin?

(Just realized how much like Eliza I sounded there.)

u/clawclawbite [+2] (2 days later)

He is a Leaf in the wind.

u/eaglejarl [+2] (2 days later)

...

I totally should have seen that one coming. Well played. Well played.

u/eaglejarl [+3] (44 seconds later)

This is effectively one chapter broken into two, because I really wanted to end the first part on a chapter break for the extra weight.

u/eaglejarl [+5] (4 hours later)

In particular, I recommend Cleaning no Jutsu, a story about a civilian cleaning woman in Konoha. Short and really fun.

In general, check my favorites list. Some of them are guilty pleasures (i.e., stories where the writing is mechanically poor or the hero is a bit Mary Sue), but I still like them.

u/eaglejarl [+5] (5 hours later)

Huh. Both work for me. Glad you found it, anyway.

u/gbear605 [+3] historys greatest story (5 hours later)

I know that the favorite page you linked to is a private page. Cleaning no Jutsu's link worked for me.

u/eaglejarl [+3] (5 hours later)

I know that the favorite page you linked to is a private page.

Doh. I should have realized that.

u/ianstlawrence [+3] (5 hours later)

Are you looking for stuff that is explicitly rationalist or are you looking for opinions about "good" Naruto Fanfiction?

u/None [+3] (5 hours later)

u/Salivanth [+5] (22 hours later)

"The Waves Arisen" is a good one, and also rational.

u/ZeroNihilist [+3] (3 hours later)

Typos:

did his idiotice chakra-granting trick

u/eaglejarl [+1] (4 hours later)

Thank you; fixed.

u/fortycakes [+3] (a day later)

Ooh.

The Fox claims that "Kaguya is dead now, so I can't fulfil my contract with her", but the Naruto setting abounds with ways to resurrect the dead.

Some of these are hard to pull off (requiring the Rinnegan, which I doubt is as absolutely-bullshit as it was in canon) and some are obviously not going to bring the soul back, which is probably what is required; however, the Impure World Resurrection, if part of Kaguya's body could be found, would allow Orochimaru to release the Fox from that bargain - or, put another way, have the biggest bargaining chip at the table.

u/eaglejarl [+3] (a day later)

Impure World Resurrection, if part of Kaguya's body could be found, would allow Orochimaru to release the Fox from that bargain - or, put another way, have the biggest bargaining chip at the table.

Ooh, nifty. Thank you for the idea!

u/liamash3 [+2] Mizu (12 hours later)

Well, Orochimaru and the Fox seem to be having fun discussing stuff. Interesting how the bijuu sees itself as a guardian, safeguarding humanity against itself and planetary annihilation threats.

u/eaglejarl [+2] (12 hours later)

Interesting how the bijuu sees itself as a guardian, safeguarding humanity against itself and planetary annihilation threats.

Absolutely. The city-destroying, young-boy-transforming Primordial being from beyond time and space is a great guy, and very protective of the tiny little monkey-people with whom he is forced to live.

u/ctulhuslp [+2] (a day later)

He is not blue-orange morale-y eldritch abomination enough though. I'd like to see truly Lovecraftian tailed beasts in some fanfiction. This one is a bit too humane, I think.

u/eaglejarl [+2] (a day later)

If you want truly inhuman, I'd suggest the Nine-Brained Fox from /u/Velorien's Lighting Up The Dark.

u/ctulhuslp [+1] (a day later)

Ah. Okay then.

Yes, I've read it already and so far Nine-Brained one seems like exactly what I wanted to see.

u/Jello_Raptor [+1] The Last Tool User (2 days later)

I'm personally quite fond of the Fox from Wertifloke's The Waves Arisen which sidesteps that entire trichotomy by

u/LeonCross [+2] (15 hours later)

Wouldn't genocide solve the problem of humans accidentlying the world with more certainty than careful population trimming as far as a blue and green morality creature goes?

Or are humans too much of a threat by this point for genocide to be a reliable option?

u/eaglejarl [+4] (22 hours later)

u/kaukamieli [+2] (a day later)

I'm pretty sure the other guy is too, so it's fair game.

u/rumblestiltsken [+2] (3 days later)

I assume this is all above board, but it seems perfectly set up for the next chapter to open with "so what do you really want to talk about?"

I could just imagine oro and kurama pretending to jockey for position and then debate and negotiate for hours until team anko went to bed.

I guess there is no point, because naruto will still know what happened. He hasn't seemed very good at preventing manipulation so far, so it could still work though.

u/blazinghand [+2] Chaos Undivided (3 days later)

I'm really enjoying this fic, but since the revelation of The Republic across the sea I'd been having trouble getting invested in that particular conflict on the side of the Ninja. Narutoverse in general seems to be a kind of horrible dystopia filled with monsters in the shape of men who can effortlessly kill people and establish military dictatorships that will never be toppled by the common people. Your average person has few political freedoms, and even if the standard of living isn't literally the worst, it's significantly worse than that of developed nations. Even worse, it doesn't seem like there's any way for it to improve with Ninja running around as a permanent untouchable warrior class.

The Republic seems like it was chakra-free long enough to get over the hump, and now can actually fight against the ninja in The Elemental Nations. They may be assholes, but if they come bearing democracy and industrialization, it may be better the world live under them than under a dictator, even a fairly friendly one like Sarutobi Hiruzen.

That being said, I'm still rooting... for someone, here. Orochimaru is an evil guy, but he's clever and cool and seems to be trying to preserve this world's magic, which is cool. He also might be the only one really capable of standing up to the nine-tailed fox in conversation.

An interesting thought: Should the Republic win, will they be able to contain the Tailed Beasts? Or is this something that can only be done with Chakra? In this light, the idea of the Republic exterminating chakra-users becomes much more worrisome.

I think Sarutobi or Jiraiya could as well but yeah, not many people.

Should the Republic win, will they be able to contain the Tailed Beasts?

The Republic could

Okay, so why two chapters today? Why not just merge them into one big chapter?

u/eaglejarl [+2] (2 minutes later)

See answer already given.

u/gbear605 [+2] historys greatest story (6 minutes later)

To be fair, you hadn't posted that when I posted.

For more clarity, according to timestamps, you posted 22 seconds before I did, which means that I was typing my post when you posted, and thus I didn't see your post.

u/eaglejarl [+3] (23 minutes later)

To be fair, you hadn't posted that when I posted.

Fair enough. However, I pretty much always leave a comment when I make a submission, and always when it's a double. Giving it 60 seconds to look for the comment isn't a bad idea.

u/gbear605 [+3] historys greatest story (44 minutes later)

Agreed, I should have waited.
