[RT][WIP][FF] A Third Option - A White Album 2 Fanfic [WA2 Spoilers]

Post:

Hi everyone, this is my first attempt at a rational story product of this year's Valentine's thread, which led me to the previous thread and to this thread. It made me consider how a rational romance story would work and how it could be applied to a relationship. Then read about this thread discussing the option of non-book smart characters that provide exposition on rational stories and thought about how it could be applied on a character whose specialty was using Emotional Intelligence coupled with logic to overcome problems and how it fit perfectly with the character of Ogiso Setsuna in White Album 2.

If you haven't watched White Album 2 and plan to, stop reading now.

The characters

1) Kitahara Haruki. Protagonist of the story. He's a high school student and ex student council president that spends his last days of high school as guitarist of the failing light music club of which only he and his friend are the last remaining members. He gets very good grades and is a good leader, usually helping on tasks of the student council despite no longer being a member. He has a down to earth way of thinking but is very clueless on romance. He's in love with Kazusa Touma.

2) Kazusa Touma. A music prodigy with an attitude problem and Haruki's classmate. Daughter of a famous pianist, she is angry at living in her mother's shadow and spends most of her time honing her pianist abilities to prepare for a scholarship overseas. Having her whole life planned for her she doesn't care about her grades and does just enough to get by. She's also in love with Haruki but is unable to express her feelings and can barely survive on her own due to having all her needs taken care of.

3) Ogiso Setsuna. A girl that meets befriends Haruki and Touma on the last year of high school. Winner of the Miss Houjo, a beauty contest in the school and highly praised by her classmates, she has self esteem issues after accidentally losing her group of friends due to a misunderstanding and her inability to find meaningful relationships. She has a high emotional intelligence and a slight manipulative streak. Acts as vocalist of the music band. She ends up falling in love with Haruki and becoming Touma's best friend in the story, drama ensues.

The story

White Album 2 is a story about three high school students that meet on their last year due to their love for music. About their friendship and how they end up hurting each other and slowly breaking apart.

In the original story Haruki after losing all members of the Light Music club decides to give up on playing when he hears Setsuna singing and invites her. Setsuna in turn convinces Touma to join them when she learns of her piano abilities and the three prepare to participate in the last school festival before graduating.

Setsuna slowly falls in love with Haruki but realizes he and Touma love each other even if they're unable to admit their feelings. She tries to make Touma confess her feelings but Touma refuses to and after the festival Setsuna decides to confess knowing that Haruki will accept her even if he doesn't truly love her.

The two start a relationship and Touma avoids them due to feeling hurt everytime she sees them together. In the last episodes Haruki unable to ignore his feelings ends up cheating with Touma and from it everything falls apart.

Now the author was really good at making the characters feel human and they actually talk about their problems and try to overcome them. The character in Setsuna despite being usually demonized (particularly by the shippers) is interesting due to her emotional intelligence. Through the story she displays an understanding of the other characters and a slight manipulative streak as she tries to maintain their friendship despite the fact it hurts all three of them yet does so in a way that it becomes hard to distinguish if she's really manipulating them or is in turn the victim of the other's actions.

Plot point

Near the end of their friendship Setsuna actually considers a polyamorous ending to keep her friendship with Touma and Haruki but discards the idea after her attempt ends uncomfortably. I thought about the possibility of tackling that as the goal of this fic's Setsuna where the character tries to achieve an optimal outcome where everyone gets what they require out of the relationship, thus getting a rational fic with a rational protagonist that uses her emotional intelligence along with logic and satisfying the rules for a rational story where the main focus is romance rather than one of the common transhumanist goals.

Challenges

  • The character of Setsuna is demonized by most fans as treacherous for taking her chances and starting a relationship. There's the risk of having her succeed at the cost of the other characters satisfaction, thus turning her into even more of a villain that imposes a toxic relationship. I actually was originally thinking of calling the fic "The ethical slut" after one of Yudowski's posts about love where it references the eponymous book which talks about being willing to explore aspects of sexuality for the sake of pleasure without worrying about cultural paradigms but decided not to due to the undesirable implications it would have over the main character.

  • The other side of the spectrum where the main character is willing to sacrifice everything to make the relationship work, thus losing the rational angle as the cost of maintaining this form of relationship surpasses the benefit. Some of the fans of this series actually wondered why she would sacrifice everything for someone that willingly cheats so I'd need to make each of the characters likable enough.

  • The moral implication, is it right to force a relationship to work if only one of the members is interested? Relationships take work but if its one sided by logic her efforts should be doomed to failure.

####Chapter 01 - Encounter

Summary On a fateful encounter Setsuna finds the love and friendship she always wanted. Unadressed feelings threaten to take it all away. Must she give up on her love for the sake of their friendship? Must she lose her friend in the pursuit of love, or can she have her cake and eat it too?

My first attempt at a rational story.

The snow was falling and the cold caressed her skin, prompting her to cover her slender body with her arms. She stared at the white motes falling from the darkened skies, her body shivering a little from the cold and the feelings inside her.

“Its winter. The season of White Album.” She repeated without thinking.

Reaching her room, she was greeted by the familiar pink walls and the stuffed animals as she took off her wet coat and left it on the nearby chair while welcoming the warmth of her bed. She was dead tired after her job and didnt feel like doing anything but lay down and think. She could still feel the excitement in her chest as she thought about him.

“Kitahara Haruki, huh” she mumbled half conscious as she turned in the matress and stared at the picture hanging on her desk, a reminder of happier times. Times when she had someone to talk to, times when everything was simpler.

Playing with her auburn colored hair in her hands, she thought about the guy that was school president yet wasnt. He was a pretty famous name in the school being one of the top students while also being head of the student council. She only knew him from afar as they hadnt interacted much, until now.

She had been taken to the student council to discuss the recent “problem” about her not entering the Miss Houjou contest, something she had never been interested in, in the first place.

“But youve won two years in a row! We cant have the contest without you!” said an exasperated member of the council, desperately trying to hide his annoyance with a half hearted smile. She could notice his fear for the fate of the contest in his burrowed brow and averted his gaze. She never could stand the look of disappointment in peoples faces, but neither was she willing to budge on this matter.

Suddenly the door opened and a black haired boy wearing the familiar black suit that was their school uniform entered the council room. It was Haruki. He had a serious expression that didnt betray emotion but as she stared straight into his dark eyes she could notice the vibrant glint of a brilliant mind behind them. From the way everyone smiled as they approached what she assumed was the councils president, she could tell he was the one that would put the more pressure on her joining the contest.

“So youre Ogiso Setsuna, right?” he said as he sat on the opposite side of her. She stared at his eyes and once again averted her gaze due to the imposing presence. It was as if he could see right through her, it was a feeling she wasnt comfortable with.

“Y-yes” she replied thinking about what he had come for and preparing to argue against joining the contest.

“Im Kitahara. Im in class E with Hiyazaka here” he said nodding to the spiky haired guy that had been trying to make her join moments before and that now looked at Haruki with a wide smile. It was evident that they had a lot of confidence in him. “Nice to meet you”

“As a matter of fact, I know your name” she replied while her gaze remained afixed on the details of the desk that separated them as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. “I always see your name at the top of the grades list” she mentioned reminiscing on all the gossip about the presidents grades and fame for strict observance of the rules.

“I know you too. Whenever theres a Miss Houjo contest I always see you at the middle. But you want to resign this year?” he asked straight to the point.

“Im sorry” she said trying to sound polite.

“The high school contest isnt like the Miss Houjo university one. We try to keep it low key, which means no stage event or swimsuit competition” he retorted, trying to point out the pros of the contest.

“I know about that of course” Not like she didnt know them, having won two years in a row had been more than enough experience for her…

“Do you still not want to do it? Are you embarrassed?” he probed. It was clear to Setsuna that he would follow through by insisting on how there was nothing to be embarrassed about and how everyone was expecting it from her.

“Im not embarrassed. I just dont really like to stand out, I guess” she replied. It was true, entering those contests had never been her intention in the first place.

“Its way too late for that” Harukis classmate replied before being quickly silenced by a nudge from the class president.

“My friends kept entering me without telling me. I was an underclassman then, so I didnt have the courage to refuse. And so I got dragged into it. I never wanted to do it but…” Setsunas reminisced on her classmates faces, giving her the good news about her entering the contest. About what was expected of her, about how she shouldnt disappoint them.

“Yet you won two years in a row! Youre obviously the top chi-ow!” Hiyazaki complained as he received another hit from Haruki that went unnoticed by her. Why did she have to participate even if she didnt care about it? But if she refused this year, would that mean everyone would end up hating her?

“Even when I was a freshman, I didnt really want to do it” she continued as she tried to come up with an excuse, perhaps she could say she had to study for college and wouldnt have time for the contest, that way he would have no option but to let her...

“Stop right there, Ogiso-san. No matter what you say now, for the last two years youve entered the contest and were the undisputed winner.” Haruki interrupted her with the same calm tone with which he had spoken since the beginning. Setsuna could notice a small hint of sharpness in his tone.

“Thats…”

“Saying you regret that is rude to your friends, who entered you because they wanted more people to know about you. To all your fans who voted for you, and to all the people that were happy you won” he said admonishing her.

“If you dont want to do it just say I dont want to do it this year. Im sorry but we cant take away your past victories.” Haruki said with finality. That wasnt what she had expected to hear.

“Cut it out!” interrupted Hiyazaki trying to defuse the situation. “Sorry Ogiso, hes persuasive, but hes got a bad habit of lecturing everybody” Hiyazaka continued, trying to end Harukis rant by placing his hand on the others mouth as Haruki tried to keep talking.

She hadnt thought of it that way, in the end her friends were doing it to make her known? After all, she shouldnt assume they had ill intentions towards her right? It…it wasnt like last time, right?

Haruki seemed to be about to reprimand him too for interrupting him when se decided to intervene.

“Its okay! Im the one in the wrong, the comittee president is right. I hadnt thought about that” she said as she thought about it. They had put their effort on her after all, so in a way it was her responsibility to participate.

“No, Im not the-” Haruki said trying to clarify but was stopped by his friend so that he wouldnt interrupt her.

“Youre right, the people who chose me had hopes for me. The people who voted for me were happy for me. Im sorry for being selfish” Setsuna said. In the end there was no other way, she had to fullfill her responsibilities to them right?

“Okay, now that its settled, Ill see you in the contes-”

“Well cancel your entry” said Haruki, surprising both the council members and Setsuna herself. What did he say? Wasnt he there to convince her to participate?

“Its okay?” she asked still unsure about it. After all he had said, was it right for her not to enter the contest?

“Of course its okay. The most important condition for entering is that you want to. If you dont want to, of course well cancel.” He said matter of factly while everyone in the council stared at him wide eyed.

“Haruki, what did you come here to accomplish?!?” Hiyazaka said exasperated, trying to contest his decision.

“I came here to stop you from steamrolling her, of course. Did you forget that the school fair is supposed to be fun?” was the response as the black haired man stood up from the chair and directed his gaze to the rest of the council.

“Then stop lecturing people” Hiyazaki replied exasperated.

“Okay people, gather! Lets have an emergency meeting” said Haruki quickly taking care of the situation and everyone followed. After that Hiyazaka thanked her for her time and showed her out. Setsuna couldnt help but admire the ease with which Haruki took care of the situation, it was evident he was used to that kind of emergencies and assuming the leadership.

As she stared at the ceiling of her room she replayed that days events over and over. She had achieved what she wanted, she was finally free from that accursed contest and could enjoy the festival just like any other student, yet in the end, was that what she wanted? Even more, she pondered about Haruki. He was supposed to recruit her yet in the end had considered her interests in the final decision.

Whats more, she wasnt sure he had done that just to please her like most boys she had known usually did, saying things they didnt really mean just to gain her favor. Or had he? That uncertainty made her feel troubled and yet, her chest beat faster at the novelty of it.

It was still snowing outside, her window clouded as the cold wind raged outside. Her last thought before falling asleep was that she wanted to get to know Haruki better.

Notes: The character here doesn't act precisely rational due to lack of knowledge of the rest and her own insecurities. This doesn't deviate much from the novel but its meant to diverge on later chapters.

So any thoughts or suggestions?

I don't remember Setsuna considering polyamory, but it was fairly clear to me throughout the series that it was the magic bullet solution to their problems.

You seem to be starting your fic very early into the story. I would have started from a key point of divergence, since the meat of the story would presumably be from the point where Setsuna begins to attempt to convince herself / the others to trial polyamory, and then as they give it a go.

I think there is probably a really good story to be written based on this premise though anyway, so good luck.

Ah thanks a lot for your comments! Really appreciate it, and probably you're right about the point on the story. I was thinking of characterizing them before starting the plot but will think how to avoid it taking too long.

About the polyamory part. Its more clear in the Light Novel and a side story they released from Setsuna's POV in which she considers the idea during the spring resort but finally discards it due to the awkwardness everybody felt.

Will try to improve it based on your suggestions. Thanks a lot!
