[Challenge Companion] Space Battles

Space battles are difficult to do without violating the rules of rational fiction.

First, you have to discard pretty much all the tropes that come with Space is Air and Space is an Ocean. Unless you work really hard at inventing technologies or sociopolitical circumstances to justify it, you're going to end up with a battle that's its own unique thing. Ships have three hundred and sixty degrees of movement, engagement happens from really far away, there's no such thing as stealth, vacuum is an insulator, there's no sound in space, and with relativistic velocities, offense almost always beats defense.

This is not to say that I think soft science fiction is inherently less rational than diamond hard science fiction. So long as rules are in place and character actions make sense within the context of those rules, I have no problems. But when you start introducing unexplained technologies that might as well be magic, you have to make sure that the result is what you think it is and the reader isn't left scratching their head about why, for example, spaceships are getting within spitting distance of each other.

I have no strong recommendations for this theme, primarily because my favorite science fiction books are focused more on politics and sociology than outright warfare. I will give a special mention to Charles Stross though, since he's one scifi author who takes getting things right very seriously.

But is stealth really all that impractical? A vehicle with black or minimally reflective plating and a narrow frame from a few thousand kilometers away would be hard to see against the background of space. Used in conjunction with radio jamming, the ship would be nearly invisible, except for heat emissions.

Stealth in space is one of those big, endless debates that's taken place on online forums since the beginning of the internet. Heat is one of the big things you need to worry about in space, because vacuum is an insulator, so IR sensors seem like they'd be one of the dominant methods of finding other ships. If you're in deep space, you're trying to hide a heat signature against a background temperature of ~3 degrees Kelvin.

It's doable if you know what direction the enemy sensors are in, if you go passive sensors only, and you have a heatsink of some kind, but it's still unworkable if you're also trying to use thrust, because spaceship engines are hot. It's exceedingly rare that scifi authors actually go through the work to get a ship properly stealthy, but I will concede that you might contrive some circumstance where it's useful and practical to go through all the effort to be stealthy.

This goes out the window if you're bringing in some softer science fiction, and there's still room for subterfuge, but stealth in space is really frickin' hard.

Of course, you might not be using classical thrust. Maybe your story is set in a DnD verse utilizing portable hole based inertial thrusters.

I always like the Culture and Polity versions of stealth in space, use some kind of virus or anti-sensor munitions package to screw with their sensors. It would be incredibly easy to detect them, if you had anything to detect them with.

NuBSG: The Scattering is my new default canon for nBSG stories, one that doesn't have the Colonials acting like total morons by crashing their ships into our star.

It's the story that should be written if it weren't for the director's desire to keep it all edgy and grim all the way to the end.

Armor is pointless since every shot will just punch straight through it. But on the other hand, you can't be hit if your movements are at all random, since bullets and missiles are painfully slow in space.

I know, this is part of the debate that consumes websites. I just wanted to remind you all that random-walking can be a reasonable tactic. (If you can spare the reaction mass, anyway.)

Of course, if you know your foe knows this, a cloud of tiny ball bearings flung in their general direction would be pretty effective.

Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series really gets me going on this subject. Not necessarily rational, but a lot of thought put into the physics constraints of space warships (at least, the ones he decided to leave in. TWO kinds of FTL travel?).

Plenty of descriptions of jumping into a system and almost instantly gaining a picture of the intrasystem traffic- as it was minutes or hours ago, based on how far away you started, along with a countdown of how long it'll be before they know you're there. Relativistic problems with even computer-generated firing solutions abound, along with my absolute favorite kind of space warfare: chucking a fuck-off big rock at an orbit-locked target that can't dodge, like a planetary command center.

I've read a couple of sci-fi novels where lasers are used as heat pumps to effectively eliminate waste heat without vastly increasing IR signature- is there a practical reason why that wouldn't work? I've never really looked into the physics of it.

David Brin's novel was the one to suggest it (excerpt in that thread). Some preliminary research doesn't really seem to turn up anything physically impossible about the concept, just impractical.
