It might have already been discussed, don't remember, but casting a genjutsu is great for silent, private communication with someone. No need to be overheard.

We've gotten to the point where we instinctively dispel, though, and that's not something we want to STOP happening instinctively.

I think it would be fine as a one time thing. In the future, the genjutsu communication could be prefaced with a code word.

Hm... maybe. But part of the "thing" about genjutsu is that it works as a combination of user input and victim expectations.
