Nice.
It's a rational-ish adaptation of the MCU, which goes through the stations of canon HP:MoR style: fast, out of order, and with extreme prejudice.
Toni Stark is funny, witty, and true to canon. The universe is more or less consistent, and feels like the Marvel Movies, except with more details and a somewhat stronger continuity.
One thing that bugs me is the portrayal of the western militaries and weapon manufacturing in general, as the fic seems to imply that basically every bullet that ever goes out of a factory will be put in an innocent cancerous orphan's head, or, failing that, in his adorable puppy. In real life, gun traffic is a really complicated issue with lots of ugly aspects, and collateral damage is only one of them. Stark Industries weapons probably kill more dissidents in banana republics than Afghan civilians.
The thing that bothered me most, though, was how liberal everyone was about joining a super-secret terrorist group without requiring any proof of its good intentions or even having an idea of what the group does. It sort of fits Toni to do this on a whim, but I'd expect Pepper to say something about how people who send a super soldier to murder people they don't like on a regular basis, have no oversight of any kind, perform regulatory capture, shoot witnesses and won't let you see any of their leaders... aren't exactly guys you should join two weeks after you decided you hated violence.

I completely expected that to be the case as soon as Toni realized the Winter Soldier was killing people.

Non-spoilers: this story was clever, funny as hell in parts, and I think it might have pulled off the "superintelligent protagonist with major wisdom failures" trope even better with HPMoR did, if only by taking more opportunities to make ironic jokes about it.
I am also quite impressed with Ozy for, after spotting a glaring missed opportunity in the Iron Man stories, proceeding to fix it rather than just ranting about it as I would have done.

Every time someone implants a nuclear reactor in their chest, I feel like this should be a prelude to an important and valuable lesson about neutrons.
u/Chronophilia [+2] sci-fi ≠ futurology (20 hours later)
Honestly, even implanting an aneutronic fusion reactor in one's chest isn't a superb idea.

At least the superheated plasma keeps the user warm.

Ozymandias finished it today (with a sequel planned to launch next month).
Heavy doses of Effective Altruism.
Story needs a proofreader, but it's not too bad.
u/traverseda [+3] With dread but cautious optimism (11 hours later)
Ozy? Like SlateStarCodex Ozy?

Yup! They also have a wordpress blog and a tumblr.

Question about AO3, since you've used it: if you upload a chapter with hyperlinks in it, what do you get out?
u/callmebrotherg [+3] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (an hour later)
Assuming that the html checks out, the chapter will have links in it, exactly where you'd expect them to be. I remember one story where every mention of a character turning on music or otherwise hearing some important noise was a hyperlink to an appropriate youtube video.
You can also embed images, change font colors (and make use of a couple of different types of font), and do some other minor formatting tricks. When you add tags, the ease with which anyone can respond to anyone else's comments on a chapter and others can follow the thread of each conversation, the myriad ways to search for stories, and the overall cleanness of the site, I cannot think of a single thing that FFnet does as well as Ao3, let alone better.

I agree with you that A03 is objectively better about tags, HTML, appearance, and a bunch of other things. Most importantly, it lets you reply to comments, which is an ENORMOUS problem I have with FFN. There's two things that FFN does better, though:
- It has a larger audience.
- It gives better statistics.
AO3 will tell me how many views the story got. FFN will tell me when they happened, what countries they came from, and a whole lot more. There's something really thrilling to me about knowing that people from very far away are reading my work, so every time I see the Isle of Man, Serbia, Korea, etc, I get a tiny shot of "I need to keep doing this!"
u/callmebrotherg [+1] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (2 days later)
I don't think that the audience factor is something that FFnet "does," and depending on the fandom it just isn't true (Homestuck has more than three times as many fics on Ao3 as on FFnet; Supernatural has 30K more on Ao3; the Captain America films have six times more fics on Ao3; Worm's numbers are dismal on both sites, so you're better off posting on SV/SB).
You're right about statistics though! I didn't think about that (I care about comments more than views, so I rarely look at the statistics).

Would "offers" be a better word?

Okay, that's fair. Last time I checked was a couple years ago and I didn't go through every fandom. (I'm also not a a fan of Worm, so that isn't an issue for me.)
u/callmebrotherg [+1] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (2 days later)
Would "offers" be a better word?
Maybe. At least for now (my impression, at least, is that Ao3 has more momentum, especially where new fandoms are concerned).
u/b_sen [+1] (an hour later)
And the links are readily distinguishable from other standard formatting (like italics)? If so, that's excellent - I have a story that uses lots of links and italics, and I'd like to preserve the effects when I upload it.
u/callmebrotherg [+1] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (2 hours later)
Cities in Dust is an excellent demonstration of all that Ao3 has to offer. Ctrl+F to "a record player skips to life" for an example of a link. Relative to the rest of the text, the only difference is that it's underlined.
u/b_sen [+1] (2 hours later)
Wonderful, thank you!
u/nerdguy1138 [+1] GNU Terry Pratchett (15 hours later)
Ffnet has sequential story ids, allowing me to suck them down as fast as their throttling will allow.
Ao3 doesn't, AFAIK. semi random ids instead.
u/traverseda [+1] With dread but cautious optimism (a day later)
Suck things down from the index page?
u/nerdguy1138 [+1] GNU Terry Pratchett (a day later)
I want all of it, preferably oldest stuff first.
Sequential was taking forever, so I gave up on ao3 archiving to focus on ffnet.
u/callmebrotherg [+1] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (2 days later)
Why do you want that much fic? Even just glancing at the summaries will sift out a lot of crap.
u/nerdguy1138 [+2] GNU Terry Pratchett (2 days later)
I'm the guy who is archiving ffnet. I made a post about it several months ago.
Uploaded to http://archive.org/details/fanfictiondotnet_repack
Thousands of people put hundreds of thousands of hours into creating those stories. Even if they're mostly crap someone should save them
u/callmebrotherg [+2] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (2 days later)
[applause]
How long have you been doing this?
u/nerdguy1138 [+1] GNU Terry Pratchett (2 days later)
About 3 years. The first 10 million took me about a year and a half to run through. The next 3 million should be a lot quicker.
u/callmebrotherg [+1] now posting as /u/callmesalticidae (2 days later)
Alas. What I'm looking for is probably not there, then.
u/nerdguy1138 [+1] GNU Terry Pratchett (2 days later)
That archive bundle includes a sqlite database of metadata. Hit "show all".
Title author fandom genre basically all the metadata that fanfiction.net provides

Do you have the fic called "Rationalizing Death by Scientist's Thesis",https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9380249/1/Rationalising-Death, and the rest of its chapters?
u/None [+1] (a month later)
[removed]
u/None [+1] (a month later)
Around july or august right now its September for me.
I hope that gives you an idea.
If it helps if I search up the chapters I could find what the author previously wrote for example for chapter 3 I found when searching on google I can see pieces of the text "Three of the criminals wrote notes right before they died. .... A Nigerian serial rapist, currently under arrest, would die of a heart attack after". He hasn't rewritten it yet but he's cleared the previous one with the other chapters in a attempt to start over. The current one is https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9380249/1/Rationalising-Death
where previously it had 10 chapters.

Because gender bending in a fan fiction adds extra layers of detail to work with and makes the story more interesting. What would a 'genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist' dude behave like as a woman? What parts of the character stay the same, and which ones get left by the wayside?
This is, of course, assuming it was well written.

Taylor came across as more or less genderless to both myself and my girlfriend, for what that small sample size is worth.
u/OrzBrain [+8] Fingers to dance, hands to catch, arms to pull (20 hours later)
or just a male in a female's body (Taylor from Worm here is the absolutely perfect example of this).
Errr, Taylor from Worm wasn't very interested in sex as far as I could tell. Emotional support and bonding/defense against the rest of the world were the goals, and just once these led to sex as almost a footnote. How is this like a male in a female's body? Isn't the standard stereotype of males that they're always interested in sex?

Mostly from the rationality point of view.
I think that when a female character in a story being rational bothers you it may be time to reevaluate some of your beliefs.
Whatever TRP inspired ideas about mating, dating, and dominance you choose to subscribe to, history does not support the idea that women cannot be rational or intelligent. Books by female authors can be indistinguishable from ones by male authors, which is strong evidence for similarity of mind and intelligence.
And all that crap about wanting to be dominated and everything that may derive from that that TRP thrives on? I find it hard to believe that evolution was so tidy when building the brain that it managed to segregate that by sex. It's in everyone, of either sex, pushed to the fore or pulled back by social circumstances or perhaps hormones, but always there underneath waiting to come out, just like the corresponding drives to dominate, whether you are male of female.
Those articles The Red Pill likes so much about how women are always teenagers or less intelligent or need to be dominated are sickening, like Nazi tracts about Jews or white supremacist rants about blacks. The fact that there is a whole lot of very weird and partially sex related dominance stuff in the human brain does not make any of the rest of that crap at all true, any more than the fact that some people have dark skin makes the white supremacists right.
TRP model of women is like a shoddy Ptolemaic model of the heavens, sometimes capable of regurgitating accurate predictions but utterly wrong about how things work.
u/captainNematode [+7] (a day later)
TRP model of women is like a shoddy Ptolemaic model of the heavens, sometimes capable of regurgitating accurate predictions but utterly wrong about how things work.
Hey now, the Ptolemaic model was fuckin' GENIUS! While perhaps not nearly accurate enough to land a probe on Titan, it was more than sufficient to predict how some fiddly planets would move during a lifetime (perhaps with some minor recalibration). There's a reason it lasted over a millenium! Don't be dissing Ptolemy by comparing him to TRP's ramblings -- if anything, geocentrism is relatively better than whatever ("wrong") bleeding edge models psychologists/human behavioral ecologists/neuroscientists use to predict human behavior, given our lack of knowledge and predictive ability there.
u/paranoidsp [+7] (a day later)
I have no idea why I see so many people on this subreddit subscribe to the completely irrational TRP ideology, but you seem to have your head on straight.
u/traverseda [+5] With dread but cautious optimism (a day later)
We're generally pretty tolerant of odd, even horrible, ideas. As long as we're not spending a bunch of time retreading the same arguments anyway.
u/traverseda [+3] With dread but cautious optimism (15 hours later)
Calling Ozy a particular gender could be insulting, or they may be fine with it.
But I vaguely recall them going on record as "owning a vagina". I don't read a lot of their stuff. They're rationalist-adjacent(-adjacent?) though.
And from what little I've read of their stuff, Toni sounds like she has a lot in common with Ozy.
u/DaGeek247 [+1] Nudist Beach (14 hours later)
I'm a dude, so I don't know if this was written well from a female perspective, but the gender issue in this story is most definitely used to further the plot.
u/somnolentSlumber [+3] (an hour later)
Pretty good. The way the author writes dialogue was consistently delightfully sarcastic and this Toni makes for a very good unreliable narrator.
