A portal that makes proton-proton fusion possible could be very handy if it weren't for all that radiation. If the Grs'thnk aren't using portal physics to fuel their ships, they're missing an opportunity.

True, but the Grs'thnk have other methods for proton-proton fusion, and a portal which has to be in vacuum and free fall isn't convenient for propulsion.
