The genre could be described as "non-fiction cosmic horror". Not 100% sure it belongs here, but it's really good and thought provoking, so I guess why not?

Archeologist fed up with Jared Diamond and people defending him dismisses OP's premise as basic, and his presentation as pretentious. If I found OP thought provoking and enjoyable, what's that make me? In any case, thanks for linking to further discussion of the ideas that I enjoyed, and for indirectly sending me to a demolition a book I really enjoyed in high school, Guns, Germs and Steel
