So I suppose this would really be only meaningful with a comparison to the demographics of Reddit. http://royal.pingdom.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/social-network-age-distribution-1024px.jpg http://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1t9khp/age_distribution_on_social_networks_and_online/

So, roughly: Age range Reddit r/rational <18 4% 10% 18-24 30% 63% 25-34 25% 23% 35-44 22% 3% 45+ 20% <1% i.e. far fewer over 35.

Interesting, though not entirely unexpected. Though I do have to note the different data collection methods almost surely play a part.
u/RMcD94 [+3] *
That's true I'm not sure how the Google Adsense works or if clicking on the ad or blocking it change the data collection because that would be sure to skew to the elderly. Regardless I'd expect this slant as transhumanism and fanfiction culture are certainly more youthful phenomenon.

r/HPMOR Sorry what?
u/noking [+1] *
Oops, fixed :P

Here's the link to the output of the form, where I inquired about the age of our r/rational redditors. About 500 people responded. Click the Distribution tab at the bottom for the table and chart reflecting this. :)
u/DaystarEld [+3] Pokémon Professor*
Wow. If ~500 people responded out of ~2050 readers, I was actually still underestimating how many people on here are lurkers. Especially since most posts cap at around 20-30ish votes.
u/Kishoto [+1] *
Haha, Yea. Assuming no one trolled and kept resubmitting the form
u/gommm [+3] *
Hmm, now I feel old. I didn't expect to be among the older ~15% at 32 years old...
u/Rhamni [+6] Aspiring author*
But seriously though, how are we coming along on the whole life extension thing?

IIRC, we've recently discovered a drug that reverses aging in muscle tissue, and it's currently undergoing testing. Hopefully in about five years it will be available.

That's a standard troll-comment by /pol/ raiders. I'm a little mystified at what it's doing here.
u/Seeworthy121 [+3] *
Not surprising, but I haven't noticed any trolls in this sub until now. :/ it was good while it lasted
u/traverseda [+2] With dread but cautious optimism*
I figure there's at least a 20% chance it was /u/eaturbrainz.
u/None [+5] *
Must I get blamed for every time a troll-response shows up in a LW-related survey? I mean, I can fully understand what information might lead you to assign that probability (I jew-troll the crap out of the politics/news subreddits sometimes), but my comment is actually #74.
u/traverseda [+1] With dread but cautious optimism*
I wouldn't call 20% "blaming" exactly....
u/None [+2] *
I'm slightly ribbing at /u/Yxoque, who spotted a troll-answer on the religion section of the LW survey, left a comment saying he knew who gave it and just had to go ask, went and asked me, and turned out to be completely wrong.
u/traverseda [+1] With dread but cautious optimism*
Heh. Well you are probably one of the most memorable, which means that finding you in the hypothesis space is easy.
u/None [+1] *
I'm still curious as to who answered CelestAI in the LW survey...
u/None [+2] *
/u/DataPacRat is the only person I've ever seen asking about "transequinism" on LW. I'd put my money on him. I also have an informative prior on his being mildly insane due to proclaiming himself a transhumanist and yet refusing to start dieting and exercising, viz: practicing the most effective known form of life-extension.
u/DataPacRat [+1] Amateur Immortalist*
I filled out the LW survey, but I have no memory of mentioning CelestAI in it.
refusing to start dieting and exercising I think you may have me confused with someone else there. I've been working on improving on both counts. My new year's resolution was to improve my sleep cycle, so that I'd be able to improve both of those items even further. Admittedly, I may not have figured out which mental-management tricks work best for me so that I can perfectly optimize all aspects of my behaviour to maximize my expected lifespan; but I'm working through the relevant search-space.

I filled out the LW survey, but I have no memory of mentioning CelestAI in it. Welp. Time to worry about who's going to backstab us all and tile the universe in ponies.
u/MoralRelativity [+3] *
So, it seems I'm in a very small minority here. I'll take that as yet more evidence that I'm still young at heart and in my mind.
u/MoralRelativity [+2] *
And I enjoyed reading all the random comments too.
