My thoughts exactly!

Harry will defeat Quirell by using the stone crumbling shaping exercise

Yudkowski confirmed it in the /r/HPMOR thread

u/MoralRelativity [+2] *

Yep.

Poor Tonks. She shouldn't have mentioned she was only two days from retirement graduation.

u/Undercover_Infant [+2] *

I soooooooo didn't notice that joke at all! Thank you!

u/Azkabant [+23] *

And that, my friends, is why you cryptographically sign your messages.

u/PeridexisErrant [+15] put aside fear for courage, and death for life*

In this case, he doesn't even need to do that - a simple password would suffice. Ideally, he'd think of a new one each morning, to use that day if time travel required it. If he forgot, he could simply decide on one randomly before opening the note, commit to including it in the note, and only trust it if present.

u/Bobertus [+13] *

When Harry receives a message from his future self he looks at his watch. If this time is not coded in the message, it's fake.

u/EliezerYudkowsky [+11] Godric Gryffindor*

Flip a coin N times and think of a large integer.

u/Strilanc [+4] *

Just don't flip the coin too many times... after all, the universe threw a fit at factoring a six digit number. You won't even get to 15 coin flips before "timelines where weird stuff happens" outweigh "timelines where authentication succeeds", assuming the factoring problem is representative of how much optimization power you can exert. (Finding a 15-bit hash collision requires on the order of a 100 tries, similar to the number of primes less than 1000.)

u/kaukamieli [+2] *

But if enemy sees you when you have gone back in time, he could just scrape the older mind and find that info.

u/InkmothNexus [+3] *

harry is an occlumens.

u/snowywish [+1] *

Occlumency can be defeated.

u/InkmothNexus [+5] *

if you're dealing with a legilimens that's good enough to break your occlumency, you've already lost.

u/snowywish [+6] *

Yes, that's why wizarding Britain lost to Lord Voldemort at every conceivable turn. I'm pretty sure the whole magic incompatibility (if in fact it is true) was contrived simply to render Harry immune from Quirrell's (and not any servant of his) legilimency, because it's that powerful.

u/kaukamieli [+3] *

Also imperius. Instant win. Why didn't V imperio H in the canon? He had many chances to.

u/None [+2] *

Canon H had resistance training against Imperius. He was taught by one of Voldemort's trusted lieutenants in his fourth year. He got good enough to shake off the spell most of the time. Also, Voldemort in canon was really, really, really dumb.

u/kaukamieli [+1] *

Doesn't matter, can just be imperiused and told to tell the truth...

u/MugaSofer [+3] *

That could be pulled off by anyone spying on him, though.

u/Azkabant [+5] *

A password system is risky. If you use a password in the future, someone who discovers it can use it against you in the past, even before you're aware of having given them the opportunity! More mundanely, someone can simply intercept and change your message, aside from the password.

u/Nepene [+1] *

That's why I have passwords to give people that inform me that whoever is using them is hostile and should be killed immediately. Also I would generally regard any written message from the future as suspicious but if I expected to have to do so I'd have a few context dependent codenames. If someone can travel back in time it is probably better to have some way to send a message with them.

u/None [+5] *

Recognition code 927; I am a potato.

u/None [+9] *

He invented that before he was an occlumens. No good.

u/None [-1] *

It would benefit more to have it than to not. It's the difference between putting "password" as your password, and "drowssap".

u/buckykat [+3] *

same number of characters, both in any competent attack dictionary?

u/paladinneph [+3] *

but an incompetent attack dictionary would only have "password"- that's the point: given the choice between shitty security, and no security, shitty security wins. remember hadran's wall? if you've seen it, it's really only knee-high. but having enemy troops forced to step over even such a small obstacle is a tactical advantage. I'd hazard that your understanding of security is flawed- security isn't there to protect against an attack, it's there to buy you time to respond to an attack. no matter how tight your security is, it can be bypassed, given infinite time. imagine harry did use a password. imagine quirrel knew he used a password. quirrel now has to delay to find out what it is. if that delay pushes him back, say, a week he instantly loses, as by that time, harry's on the train back home. if he tries without it, he loses, as harry knows it's not future!harry communicating with him. even if he knows the original potato code, if he uses that, he runs the risk of losing due to harry changing it after learning occulomancy, so to be safe, he'd have to delay to verify that he didn't.

u/None [+9] *

This is very very exciting.

u/Gurkenglas [+9] *

Can someone point me at where we had at least come as far as "To memory-charm a student, imperius a professor?"

u/JackStargazer [+13] Primordial Apologist*

Certain magical actions in Hogwarts, which are beyond a certain level of harm, trigger the Hogwarts wards to alert the Headmaster to the time and place of their use. Professors however are whitelisted in the wards, and will not trigger them, presumably because the headmaster would otherwise have alarms going off during regular classes. As such, if we accept that a student was Memory Charmed - presumably a prohibited action - then the caster must have been a professor. So, to memory charm a student without alarm, Imperius a professor.

u/Gurkenglas [+4] *

Yes, I understood that part, what I was trying to ask is where in this or the other subreddit we had already said that general rule explicitly.

Shit, Harry gave Quirrell the idea for who to Legilimens.

u/None [+10] *

"Maybe Professor Sprout was the Game Controller - the Head of House Hufflepuff would be the last person anyone would suspect, which ought to put her near the top of Harry's list. He'd read one or two mystery novels, too." - Chapter 13

u/dplummer [+4] *

Why did Volde refer to Harry as Tom Riddle? Is the real so n of the Potters dead, and Volde replaced the baby with a baby Tom?

u/sciolizer [+5] *

Harry's mysterious dark side is (a portion of) Tom Riddle.

u/Bobertus [+6] *

Didn't the sorting hat deny something like that?

u/sciolizer [+20] *

The sorting hat denied that there was a ghost residing in Harry's scar, which I interpret to mean that Harry's scar has no agency of its own. Still, it's probably more accurate for me to say that Volde believes Harry to be Tom Riddle, in some sense. Even more accurate to say that Volde wants Harry to believe this.

u/Nepene [+9] *

"I can tell you that there is definitely nothing like a ghost - mind, intelligence, memory, personality, or feelings - in your scar." More likely Harry's brain is Tom Riddle and there is nothing in the scar.

u/None [+6] *

Yes. Quite explicitly. But it could have been wrong.

u/Pluvialis [+5] Second Age Sauron*

Not 'wrong' - lying. It said so itself (something like "We both know I could just be saying whatever it takes to fulfil my utility function quickest, and you have no way of verifying that so shut up and move on").

u/None [+1] *

Oh hey. I'd completely forgotten that bit.

u/Gurkenglas [+2] *

Why'd Voldie try to trick Tom via a route of thought that requires a breaking of suspension of disbelief if that's the only thing that keeps Tom allied with Voldie? What happened in front of that door seems like a plan that's much more complicated than is needed if it only needs to get Snape out of the way and Harry trying for the Stone.

u/MaxDougwell [+13] *

I think he wanted Harry to know, so he could render him more predictable. If he kept up the facade but Harry had an epiphany at an inopportune moment, Voldie would be at a slight disadvantage as he had to pull out his gun. Now he's just a trigger-finger away from disabling Harry if Harry doesn't do exactly as he says.

u/xamueljones [+6] My arch-enemy is entropy*

Why are you assuming that Quirrel is still going for the Stone? It doesn't make sense to me that if he wanted the Stone, he would use Harry. It's better to use other students as the unwitting minion. Of course they could fail and Harry would be more likely to succeed, but it doesn't feel right to me. I think Quirrel is going for a confrontation with Harry for something relating to the Horcruxes. Remember that all of Harry's information on the Horcruxes came from Quirrel and there could be an unknown benefit such as Quirrel is capable of moving his brain-state from his current body into Harry's or something like that.

u/alexanderwales [+3] Time flies like an arrow*

It needs to get Snape out of the way, Harry going for the Stone, and no involvement from aurors or other pesky people, nor any way that Harry can easily contact the aurors or other pesky people with Patronus, magic mirror, Time-Turning etc. That accounts a lot of the shenanigans and the complexity required for the plan.

u/kaukamieli [+1] *

Maybe Harry should just not cooperate, let V die without stone and kill anyone he wants to. Harry can then get the stone and resurrect everyone. It looks obvious to me, that Harry absolutely wants to use the stone, so maybe it's protected in a different way from canon. Daaaaamn, actually if it's just transfiguration V wants, Harry could just say V should use some unicorn blood in the process, as he knows someone who has been transformed permanently... Eternal polyjuice? Do you make the stone with unicorn blood? Does the stone produce unicorn blood? Is the stone the heart of a unicorn, or the alicorn princess? :D
