I agree. Don't really see how it qualifies as even a remotely related subreddit.

If that's consensus I can remove it. It predates my time as a mod though, so I'm not sure when/why it was added. Edit: Alright, removed.

Huh, I didn't even realize that was there. I made a post that linked to it a few months ago as a bit of cross-subreddit awareness for rational relationship advice/philosophy, but agree completely that it doesn't belong in the Related Subreddits field.

One of the mods there is /u/DayStarEld, so that might be the connection.

Objecting to removing it (and sorry I'm in late). /u/DaystarEid runs that sub, and had specifically asked for it to be featured on the sidebar. It addresses a form of irrational worldview and belief, and addresses it via informing people of how things really are. In particular, it addresses misconceptions that people visiting this sub (eg: people in the LW-o-sphere) are actually more likely to have than randomly-selected redditors.

Well, ok, if he thinks it should be taken out of the sidebar, that's fine then.

Removed that one too, mostly because it's run its course and the sub has too few people for any actual discussion, plus its relationship is almost entirely tangential. (Feel free to give me any strong disagreements here.)

I started /r/rokosrooster as a place specifically to discuss how silly he basilisk is, especially because it's one of the most internet-popular pieces of LW culture.
u/cae_jones [+12] *
It wouldn't be a part of LW culture if the wider internet would stop pretending it is, which I suspect is the reason that /u/FuguofAnotherWorld objects. That said, yes, the Basilisk is silly, and I can think of no less annoying context to say so than /r/Rokosrooster.

What's LW?
u/gregx1000 [+6] *
It stands for Less Wrong, which is a community that is really dedicated to rationalism. At one point a while back there was a post on their site that was assumed by some to be a memetic hazard (though it isn't really) called Roko's Basilisk, and a lot of people freaked out about it. That's what the subreddit they're discussing references. Some googling can tell you more if you're curious; I know Eliezer Yudkowsky talked about it in depth on the xkcd subreddit a while back.
u/krakonfour [+6] *
I think memetic hazards as rather silly, and the idea of a past-venging future AI entity as self-contradictory unless it was aself-made problem (the only reason a rational AI that decides to take revenge on those who didn't contribute to its creation would be created is if the people who created it designed it in a way to take revenge on people who aren't of their group).
u/lehyde [+4] Nudist Beach*
I don't think the general concept of memetic hazards is silly. Some knowledge can be very dangerous. Roko's basilisk isn't one of them but that's beside the point.

LessWrong, the website and community where the rational fiction genre was first defined.

Thanks.

That makes sense, I guess I misunderstood the whole 'defeat the bassilisk' thing in the sidebar. All the same, I think it might have run its course. I just wish the whole rooster thing would go away, but the internet has a long memory for such things.

Funny story. It was originally a sub dedicated to the abolition of sleep on the premise that the art we produce now is more thrilling than dreams -- instead, they said, we should spend that time making and consuming rational fiction. Sadly lack of sleep did a number on their heads, and their tired logic suggested that even bothering with art was useless because relationships provide a more primal pleasure. So between sleepless promiscuous nights they're now trying to perfect those through a Dr. Bronner-esque philosophy that we're held in a false entrapping Matrix, termed the Blue Pill, of political correctness and effeteness that dilutes the primality of our desires, but from which the only and equally wrong escape is the Red Pill, representing the domineering view that women are weak and worthless. In short, there is no escape. I repeat there is no escape. Neither pill is acceptable. All we can do is avoid sleep to see the horror with more clarity. The sleep is behind me right now, isn't it?

Don't slay the courier of an ideology. I like dreams too.

I know, right? Like saying that water is outdated because we have hard liquor. Don't get me wrong, hard liquor has it's merits, but it's kind of shit at the hydration thing.
u/Riddle-Tom_Riddle [+4] *
Not from my perspective. I would trade my right arm for the ability to never have to sleep again, and never being tired in the sense of feeling like I have to sleep. I doubt that I don't dream, but I have never been able to remember one, or even have a vague feeling of having been dreaming. I naturally find it more than a little difficult to fall asleep unless I'm exhausted, and once I do fall asleep, I wake up with no time having passed from my perspective. Unfortunately, if I don't get 7+ hours of sleep, I feel like shit for the whole day.

You clearly haven't been awake long enough.
u/Salivanth [+3] *
People who take the red pill in the Matrix see the world for what it really is when they wake up. People who "take the red pill" in the real world are people who accept the worldview of that subreddit. They're said to see the world for what it really is, instead of deluding themselves. Of course, the reality is completely the opposite, but that's their thought process.

Tagged you half a year ago. Had no idea you came here, though.

It's good. I lost interest halfway through, but picked it up again half a year ago and finished it. The end game is awesome.
u/NotAHeroYet [+5] City of Angles Municipal Government*
Really? I thought the end-game was the worst part. Sure, the idea is awesome, but the overwheming despair, and the general pointlessness just made it unpleasant to read for me. I liked part of it, but it was a climax of the story, and i rarely like those. The final conflict is just disapointing, to me. The epliouges were nice, though
u/Rhamni [+2] Aspiring author*
Eh, I could have done without the epilogues. Khepri's final chapter ended just right.
u/NotAHeroYet [+4] City of Angles Municipal Government*
I liked the final one, but i also didn't. The epliouges tell us more about what Spoilers, can be read by skipping and should still be coherent happened to the other characters. What happened to everyone when the ultimate enemy is defeated.
u/Rhamni [+1] Aspiring author*
I'd spoiler the last bit too, since there is someone earlier in the comment chain who is still reading.
u/NotAHeroYet [+1] City of Angles Municipal Government*
The last bit? couldn't it be anyone from lung to the illuminati to vampires a la twilight? all it mentions is that there is an eplioge, that the ultimate enemy- oh, that'd be slight spoilers- corrected, there, and that the eplioge is about a character that isn't the one in spoiler. Is it sufficient now?

It sounds like you're lacking a bit of sleep

I remember this! It was posted here a while ago; I didn't realize it got put on the sidebar at the time, it was just bringing attention to the subreddit at the time. https://www.reddit.com/r/rational/comments/2tuhlt/offtopic_ysk_about_a_place_for_rational/
