Post:
Hi guys,
I found this subreddit a couple of weeks ago and i am loving it. I have read through a bunch of stuff already including a lot of the stuff on the wiki. I would now like to move on and read some of the stuff that is nor marked on the wiki but that is really good.
Right now my favorites from here have been:
- A hero's war
- Mother of Learning
- Harry potter and the methods of rationality
- Practical guide to Evil
- How to avoid death
With that in mind what stories from this subreddit would you recommend?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The Waves Arisen is a personal favourite of mine - it's a rational!Naruto story, and while the author is anonymous, I think the consensus is that most likely the author of HPMOR wrote it.

I also love The Waves Arisen, but I don't think it shares an author with HPMoR. The styles are reasonably different, I don't think the timing works, and there are a few minor things that support the conclusion. It seems likely to be someone in the core LW membership though.

(Also, I feel like EY is the kind of person who likes to take credit for stuff they wrote? I don't see why they would publish a work under a pseudonym.)
u/Fredlage [+1] *
He did give margin for that by stating some time ago that he might publish something under a pseudonym and asking that people answer with "can't confirm or deny" if asked whether they were him
u/PeridexisErrant [+1] put aside fear for courage, and death for life*
What really kills the "Wertifloke is EY" hypothesis is asking when he would have had time to write it - HPMoR updates were slowed considerably by work pressures, and the idea that he could take time off to finish it and then immediately (secretly) to write another story just seems too much.
u/Fredlage [+1] *
I don't know either way... I was just pointing out that "He wouldn't use a pseudonym" doesn't work because of that
u/None [+1] *
Yeah, I definitely can't imagine him publishing anonymously,
u/MugaSofer [+1] *
EY has said or implied that he's written stuff under a pseudonym, I forget which. He's asked that people try to avoid confirming or denying that they're him to give him plausible deniability.
u/None [+1] *
HPMOR was initially written under the pseudonym Less Wrong, and only later was the true author confirmed. So it's happened at least once, temporarily.
u/gabbalis [+1] *
Well, I usually reference vague suspicious posts by Eliezer every time the Waves Arisen topic comes up on /r/rational, thus implying that I believe it to be him, and perhaps increasing the impression of community consensus on the the authorship. But of course I would never take an explicit stance on my true suspicions. Of course it isn't impossible. This is Eliezer "Pet Rock" "Alicorn Princess" Yudkowsky we're talking about.
u/yuridez [+1] *
I think the consensus is that most likely the author of HPMOR wrote it No, I think that's extremely unlikely, and I have no idea what kind of consensus you could be referring to.
u/waylandertheslayer [+1] *
It's been a while since I saw it, but there was a post on here (/r/rational) where the potential authorship was discussed, and IIRC in the end it seemed EY was the most likely author. I could be wrong, though.
u/yuridez [+1] *
IIRC in the end it seemed EY was the most likely author I would bet massive odds againt it. From what I remember of discussion on the topic here, most people thought it was pretty unlikely as well. I would say <5% chance it's EY, where would you put it?
u/waylandertheslayer [+1] *
Around 50%, but with a low certainty. It's been a few months since I saw that thread, and the thing that convinced me the most is that he's publicly called on other people to keep it a mystery, and not to confirm or deny being the author. It's the sort of thing that fits very neatly with a model of EY who wrote something anonymously and wants to keep it that way, but doesn't fit that well if he's not the author, imo. I could be wrong though.

Heya, welcome to the sub! I should probably plug the podcast (by Alexander Wales and myself), as Episode 0 goes over the history of the genre and lists some other stories you might enjoy: http://www.daystareld.com/podcasts/rationally-writing/ Hope you enjoy it!
u/techgorilla [+2] *
Nice, thanks. I will subscribe to the feed.
u/narfanator [+8] *
I would highly recommend "Significant Digits" and "Draco and the Practice of Rationality". There's also EY's earlier fiction, "Three Worlds Collide". Anything by alexanderwhales; "The Metropolitan Man", "Shadows of the Limelight", "Glimwarden" (currently being written).
Also commonly listed are Wildbow's "Worm" and "Twig" (and for some of us, "Pact").
u/None [+11] *
Er, you do mean alexanderwhales, right? Scott Alexander is of slatestarcodex and unsong fame.
u/narfanator [+2] *
Dammit, names. Yes, alexanderwhales.
u/Fredlage [+4] *
There's no 'h' though
u/noggin-scratcher [+10] I am a happy tree*
I know that getting his name wildly wrong is a running joke on /r/parahumans but that looks close enough up be a typo: author of Worm is wildbow, not wildblow
u/waylandertheslayer [+3] *
The Superman one is 'The Metropolitan Man' and the lantern one is 'Glimwarden'. If you've read Worm, I also recommend the Memorials series (about as rational as Worm is, and very well-written - basically solo!Taylor the fanfic).
u/trekie140 [+2] *
Fair warning about Metropolitan Man, it is not a superhero story. Do not expect to get out of it what you normally get from a superhero story, let alone one about Superman. It is intentionally depressing and cynical, and if you don't want to see Superman in a story like that you shouldn't read it.
u/None [+1] *
Is Twig better than Pact? I tried with Pact for a long time before giving up, maybe I didn't give Twig enough of a chance

Yeah I read a couple of chapters now. I gotta say, I didn't love the first one - though I didn't in Worm either, and I'm glad I kept reading that.

The first four books of The Runelords have been discussed here previously.

i read the summary and it just doesn't seem appealing to me.

/r/Hpmor has a sticky with some stories that aren't on the wiki

Is "staple histories" some kind of rhyming slang variant for "stories"?
u/GaBeRockKing [+17] Horizon Breach: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6785857*
I'd guess English is his second language-- 'historia' is spanish for 'story' (and not just history) and "história" is portuguese for story.
u/waylandertheslayer [+8] *
Histoire is french for story, too - maybe it's common to all latin-based languages?
u/Liberticus [+2] *
Historia is a Swedish word for story, pretty close I guess.
u/nolrai [+1] *
I think the story/history are sibling words too, losing an h is very common. So I think the distinction is a English innovation.
u/Solonarv [+5] Chaos Legion*
It's the same in French ('histoire') and German ('Geschichte'), too.
u/techgorilla [+4] *
oooh i see now i wrote histories, not stories. Yes my main language is spanish and i sometime get those confused.
u/techgorilla [+2] *
i do not understand the joke. sorry.
u/TJ333 [+5] *
Staple histories does not make sense as a phrase. He is asking if you are using some kind of slang.
u/techgorilla [+7] *
Ahhhh. well English is not my first language. Y thought staple also meant something like the main or best of something. I guess i am wrong. EDIT: oooh i see now i wrote histories, not stories. Yes my main language is spanish and i sometime get those confused.
u/None [+5] *
Staple does mean that, but history means past. I think you meant stories, not histories
u/techgorilla [+6] *
yes i meant stories. i get those confused a lot. sorry.
u/Areign [+2] *
Eliezer Yudkowsky endorsed Significant Digits as a great continuation fic of his HPMOR There are a lot of shorts on here if you go to 'top alltime' that you should check out
- ...And i show you how deep the rabbit hole goes
- the great filter
- The Randi Prize
- The Rules of Wishing
u/Fredlage [+2] *
I strongly recommend The Gods Are Bastards
u/SimonSim211 [+1] *
I quite like www.paultwister.com/ (if that doesn't work use https://www.paultwister.com/ and ignore the warnings). Not sure how Rational this is http://www.wuxiaworld.com/wmw-index/ but I like it
u/GaBeRockKing [+1] Horizon Breach: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6785857*
I agreed with the person who reviewed Paul Twister the last time it was posted here- by the second book, it kind of falls flat. It's still great if you like all things "civilizational uplift," but taken as a rational work I'm not so sure.
